Event Blog: Gattaca

Event Blog: Gattaca I attended the class screening of Gattaca. It is set in a dystopian future society where the perfection of genetic manipulation has a created two classes of citizens. The protagonist is a natural born human relegated to menial labor jobs but aims for something more. He eventually gets his chance when he is offered an opportunity to assume the identity of a genetically modified human who was in an accident that left him paralyzed. With his new identity, he joins a space program meant for genetically perfect specimens. This movie raised many questions about the ethics regarding genetic manipulation. With all the discrimination currently present in the world, it isn't hard to imagine this vision of a two-class world coming to fruition. Gattaca showcases both the beauty in striving for perfection as a race, but also the dark underside of such an endeavor.
